Wind Energy Technology Platform - call for expression of interest PDF Print E-mail

The wind energy sector is establishing the European Wind Energy Technology Platform (TPWind) to drive towards cost reductions and to address barriers to wind energy development, looking towards 2030. TPWind crystallizes and prioritizes technology and policy research as well as facilitates policy development among EU Member States.

The demand for renewable heating and cooling is growing steadily and will further accelerate for many years to come. With this the demand for new technologies, such as solar thermal, is also rapidly increasing in this sector. The European Solar Thermal Technology Platform (ESTTP) is at the forefront of these changes, and aims at developing a strategic research plan for solar thermal technology and markets until 2030.

The Renewable Energy Council (EREC) welcomes the principle of having a binding target of 20% renewable energy by 2020. But now the concrete work has to start and the necessary measures to reach the target need to be implemented quickly.

Deadline for DG TREN FP7 'Energy' research proposals postponed PDF Print E-mail

DG TREN has decided to extend the deadline for its first call for research proposals under the 'Energy' theme of the 'Co-operation' programme in FP7. A deadline of 28 June 2007 replaces the deadline of 3 May 2007 that we reported on 22 December 2006. The Commission announced the extension at an FP7 'info day' in Brussels on 13 February. The deadline for DG RTD proposals remains unchanged at 3 May.

Today is the last day that the DTI will accept bids from organisations wanting to host the UK’s Energy Technologies Institute. It is also the day that an article in the FT reported that Energy Ministers are reluctant to support Barroso’s idea for a European Institute of Technology.

Proposed European Institute of Technology should accredit European Master's courses PDF Print E-mail

The European Institute of Technology (EIT), according to the Commission's proposal, is to be given the power to issue degrees for post-graduate students studying a field of research covered by one of its Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs). Member States should recognise the degree. There will also be the option for universities in KICs to award joint or multiple degrees independently of the EIT.

EUREC Agency wants to add another element to the EIT's mandate in education: it should act as an accreditation agency for European Master's courses.

UK and EU 'Technology Institutes' to focus on energy PDF Print E-mail

The European Institute of Technology (EIT) is going to focus on climate change and energy in the early stages of its existence, European Commission President Barroso has announced. He expects the EIT’s first KIC (Knowledge and Innovation Community) to be on either one, or both, of these themes.

Meanwhile, the UK, motivated also by the threat of climate change, intends to create an organisation like the EIT called the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI). Energy technologies will be its only focus.
