The EU Member States adopted on 12 October 2006 a decision to establish the European Competitiveness and Innovation Programme 2007-2013 programme.  Around 20 per cent of the € 3.2 billion budget envelope of this programme will be allocated to the Intelligent Energy - Europe II programme. The concrete sum currently discussed is around the € 730 million mark.

In a press briefing this morning, European renewable energy industry associations called for the European Commission to acknowledge the European Parliament’s decision to prioritise research in renewable energy. The Commission has recently ignored the European Parliament's decision to strengthen the research budget for renewables and energy efficiency.

EUREC Agency publishes recommendations for horizontal research topics pertaining to renewable energy that should be covered in FP7. There is much research of relevance to renewable energy that does not fall neatly under one of the three categories to be found in the European Commission’s proposal for FP7:  “Renewable electricity generation”, “Renewables for heating and cooling” and  “Renewable fuel production”.

A dozen promising research results in the field of renewable energy have been selected for support in commercialisation by a new initiative to promote technology transfer. This initiative is the first of its kind to adopt an EU-wide and sectorial approach to technological innovation based on public research results.

European Parliament earmarks 2/3 of FP7 energy budget for renewable energy and energy efficiency research . Voting in Strasbourg yesterday, the European Parliament adopted an amendment calling for approximately two thirds of the funding for non-nuclear energy research in the Seventh Framework Programme for Research, Development and Technical Demonstration (‘FP7’) to be directed towards renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency and savings.

The plenary vote on the Seventh Framework Programme for Research, Development and Technical Demonstration (FP7) is a few days away. Its important to support amendments 320 and 340 that call for two thirds of the budget for non-nuclear energy research to go towards renewable energy and energy efficiency.

In its first meetings, the Scientific Council has extensively debated the scientific strategy to be adopted by the ERC, in particular in its start-up phase.  In view of the high expectations of the ERC and the enormous demand for funding, as well as the need to maintain and build momentum in the ERC's development, it is imperative that funding starts at the very beginning of the 7th Framework Programme. Perspectives financières Le Parlement européen a trouvé un accord avec la Présidence du Conseil sur les perspectives financières 2007- 2013. Quatre milliards d'euro supplémentaires, par rapport à ce que les Etats membres avaient décidé au Conseil européen du mois de décembre dernier, seront alloués aux programmes européens (recherche, innovation, PME, réseaux transeuropéens, échanges universitaires Erasmus).

EUREC Agency and other non-nuclear energy interests join forces to press for non-nuclear energy funding in FP7  Regarding an energy policy for Europe, the Spring European Council concluded that “given the urgency of the challenges to be faced”, one of the first steps that the Commission should take is to “secure adequate priority for energy in the 7th Framework Programme”.
