In an article on the BBC News website, "Solar panel costs set to fall", Prof Wim Sinke, Chairman of the European Photovoltaic Technology Platform is quoted saying, "The target of the [photovoltaic] sector as a whole is to reach grid parity in almost all of Europe over the next 10 years. So by 2020 we should have grid parity in most of Europe."
'Grid Parity' is a situation where "it is as cheap for someone to generate power on their homes as it is to buy it from the grid." The article also contains comments from Dr Heinz Ossenbrink from the JRC, reporting his studies of how panels fare under accelerated ageing tests: more than 90% of the panels on the market 10 years ago are capable of still performing well after 30 years of life, albeit with a slight drop in performance. EUREC Agency is one of four organisations supporting the Platform under a contract from the European Commission, PV TP - SEC. |
