The European Institutions and Renewable Energy (Research)

Brussels has become the political heart of the European Union, as it has become the city of interest representation. The directives of the European Council and Parliament, initiated at the Commission, have a decisive impact on how much money is spent on what, which policy is implemented, what choices EU member state societies have to make.

EU-funded Renewable Energy R&D is carried out under the programme title "Sustainable Energy Systems" (SES) that is part of the European Commission’s (EC) Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP6), which spans the period 2002-2006. Sustainable Energy Systems (SES) research falls within the thematic area “Sustainable Development, Global Change and Ecosystems”.

  SES research programme objectives
  • Reduction of greenhouse gases and pollutant emissions
  • Security of energy supply
  • Increased use of renewable energy
  • Enhanced competitiveness of European industry

RTD into sustainable energy systems is divided into two areas that are managed by two different Directorate Generals: DG Energy and Transport, and DG Research.

Research activities having an impact in the short and medium term

FP7

Research in this area is focussed on bringing innovative and cost competitive technologies onto the market by demonstration projects and research into technical, institutional, financial and social issues. Clean energy, in particular renewable energy sources and their integration into the energy system, including storage, distribution and use.  Energy savings and energy efficiency, including those to be achieved through the use of renewable raw materials.  Alternative motor fuels.

This part of the Thematic Priority is managed by DG Energy and Transport
Activities promoting the uptake of renewable energy are managed by a separate Agency: the Intelligent Energy - Europe (EIE) Executive Agency. (until 2004 managed by DG TREN): Intelligent Energy Europe (ALTENER, SAVE, STEER, COOPENER programmes)

Research activities having an impact in the medium and long term

In the longer term the aim is to develop new, clean energy sources and carriers which are affordable and can be integrated into energy supply networks.
  • Fuel cells, including their applications.
  • New technologies for energy carriers/transport and storage, in particular hydrogen.
  • New and advanced concepts in renewable energy technologies
  • Capture and storage of CO2, associated with cleaner fossil fuel plants.

This part of the thematic priority is managed by DG Research.

The current Framework Programme: FP6 (until end of 2006)

The next Framework Programme: FP7 (currently under preparation)
