Project objectives

The value of public funded scientific research to society consists primarily in the development of new or improved technologies, materials, processes and applications that support sustainable growth and create employment in a knowledge-based competitive economy. Yet, society can only benefit from research results if these are transferred from the laboratories to the market as licensed technology or newly created technology-based company.

It has been widely recognised that too few projects initiated under both national as well as EU funded research projects find their way to commercial exploitation. It has also been widely recognised that there exists a lack of communication/information channels between the R&D institutions and financial institutions as providers of financial support for the commercial exploitation of the said results, and industry.
The ProRETT project proposes an innovative and structured methodology for quicker and larger exploitation of existing scientific RTD results in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency in the form of licensing and spin-off creation in Europe.

ProRETT addresses problems

  • sub-optimal exploitation of EU public research results
  • EU RE R&D scientific excellence often poorly translates into market innovation
  • fragmentation of stakeholders & policy framework

Main purpose of ProRETT is to

  • apply an innovative & structured methodology
  • quicker & broader exploitation of existing scientific RTD results
  • licensing & spin-off creation based on scientific RTD results

The main steps of ProRETT are to

  • identify the most promising RTD results that are ready for innovation activities
  • agree on a common long term vision for each of them
  • design for each of them a series of business model options that will be supported by private investors
The overall objective of ProRETT is

  • to address the technical barriers for transforming scientific research results into viable innovations
  • to unite all stakeholders relevant for technology transfer (research, industry, investors, technology transfer professionals)
  • to promote the market uptake of renewable electricity and renewable heating and cooling technologies by European companies or start-ups
  • to distil best practices & policy recommendations

How you can participate
Would you like to participate in our technology promotion project? All publicly funded research in the field of renewable energy is eligible for participation in the ProRETT project.


Under which conditions should you consider to participate?

  • You have access to scientific R&D that has been co-funded by EU or national funds
  • You feel that some of your R&D results are of commercial interest, that they could lead to a new application, an improved process or an innovative material, etc.
  • You would like to make "something" out of your R&D results and don't know how to go about
  • You have a concrete idea how your R&D results could be used but you can't implement it alone
  • You need support in market assessment, business planning and the organisation of funds

The ProRETT consortium is happy that the Commission sponsors us to help you with

  • Assessment of the commercial potential of your R&D result(s)
  • Risk analysis (market, financial, entrepreneurial risk)
  • Advice on IPR management and exploitation
  • Definition of an exploitation plan
  • Coaching in business plan development
  • Brokering contacts with interested investors
  • Help with licensing deals
  • Entrepreneurial training for scientists interested in start-up creation
  • Assistance in start-up creation
  • Long-term support to the willing teams
