Strengthen the European Photovoltaic Sector and support to establish a PV Technology Platform PDF Print E-mail

Project details: FP6 Co-ordination Action (Sustainable Energy Systems)
Full title:  Strengthen the European Photovoltaic Sector and support to establish a PV Technology Platform
Acronym: PV Sec
Contract number:  513548
Project duration: July 2005-July 2009

Project objectives

The PV Technology Platform Secretariat supports the EU Photovoltaic Technology Platform (EU PV TP).

The EU PV TP is a group composed mainly of representatives from the photovoltaic research community and industry whose purpose is to speak with a unified voice to the European Commission and Member States on matters relating to PV. In particular, the TP will look at how public policy at European and national level can better support PV.

Working Group 3 looks specifically at how public policy relating to research can benefit the industry. For many years, it has been a challenge to co-ordinate photovoltaic research between Member States and each other, and Member States and the European Commission. Research could be conducted much more efficiently a) if those who carry out and benefit from the research agree a common strategy and b) if those who fund it decide what each should contribute to realising the strategy. Thanks to EU PV TP and the PV-ERA-NET project, it should be easier to achieve a) & b).

WG3's first significant output, the 'Strategic Research Agenda', was presented on 19 May 2006 at EU PV TP's General Assembly and is now open for consultation and discussion (see section below)
The homepage of EU PV TP is www.eupvplatform.org  and of Working Group 3 within EU PV TP, www.eupvplatform.org/index.php?id=43

The participants in the WG3 not paid for their work for the EU PV TP and only a small number receive help with covering the cost of their travel.

  EUREC's role in PV Sec

EUREC Agency is a member of the PV Technology Platform's secretariat and is mainly responsible for the support of Working Group 3 ("Science, Technology and Applications") led by Prof Wim Sinke (ECN, Holland). Our role is to draw up agendas for meetings, write the minutes of the meetings and where possible update members on European policy. Besides the EUREC Agency office, you may also contact Arnulf Jäger-Waldau at the JRC Ispra for information on this working group.

  PV Secretariat Strategic Research Agenda

A Strategic Research AgendaforPhotovoltaic Solar EnergyConversion Technology Research and development in support of realizing“A Vision for Photovoltaic Technology”,Report of the PV Technology Research Advisory Council (2005)

Prepared by Working Group 3“Science, Technology and Applications”of the PV Technology Platformdraft version 1.3a, June 2006for public consultation

Preface and disclaimer

This document has been drafted by Working Group 3 of the PV Technology Platform, based on thorough consultations with representatives of research, industry and other stakeholders.

The current draft version is still only a compilation of individual chapters dealing with different fields of technology. Moreover, some parts and chapters are still missing. A further harmonization and integration as well as a discussion on overall priorities will take place over the next months. An important reason for public consultation at this stage is the fact that the European Commission needs input for the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) by the middle of 2006. The Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) will be developed further after that time. Please note that the Working Group may still adopt modifications proposed by members of the Group themselves.
It is noted that in addition to this draft SRA several background documents have been prepared. These contain considerably more detail than the SRA. They are not subject of this consultation for practical reasons.

The reader is also invited to consider the presentation on the SRA given at the 1st General Assembly in Brussels, on 19 May 2006. The file may be downloaded from www.eupvplatform.org
Comments on this SRA are welcomed, preferably concise and focusing on major issues, not on format and wording (which will be improved anyway).

On behalf of the Working Group,
