5th EU Energy Summit5 March 2019
WHY A NEW SUMMIT ?
In order for Europe to be in line with the Paris Agreement, the EU will have to surpass the targets, rules and guidelines it has imposed by adopting the «Clean energy for all Europeans » package by 2050.
How can Europe succeed and surpass these targets and how far should it go?
The draft EU long term GHG reduction Strategy unveiled in November 2018 by the European Commission sets out 8 different scenarios for the EU by 2050. Before the finalisation of this Strategy in 2020, it is now up to the Member States, the European Parliament, the industry and civil society to discuss, provide input on the feasibility of the strategy and determine which goals are achievable.
Similarly, EU industries will now need to translate the European objectives into sectorial goals and identify the technological and policy levers to reach them. This will certainly require a more transversal approach including cross-sector cooperation and coordination.
These questions will be at the forefront of the European energy and climate policy agenda, and are therefore at the heart of the 5th EU Energy Summit’s debates, on 5 March 2019.
