EUREC MASTER: |
Passing on the torch My six year term as President of EUREC comes to an end in the New Year and I thought I would use this opportunity to reminisce. It has been an exciting period and I’m glad to have represented EUREC’s efforts and contributions to transform Europe’s energy sector into a more efficient system powered by renewables. One of the high points happened in June 2011, when we organised a successful event in the European Parliament to discuss future R&D support for research and innovation in renewable energy and celebrate EUREC’s 20th Anniversary as the voice of renewable energy research in Europe. The event attracted more than 100 participants and was a major milestone! Whenever I was in Brussels I tried through the Secretariat to organise meetings with senior officials from the European Commission and Parliament. These were challenging experiences and excellent opportunities to provide expert input and, therefore, to show the EUREC’s relevance in providing valuable guidance. I’m convinced that these meetings helped raise the profile of EUREC and I believe they influenced the decision to invite EUREC to join the Coordination Group of the SET- Plan Integrated Roadmap. Weber, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, was elected as EUREC’s President for the term 2015-2017. The election was held during the EUREC College of Members and took place on 26 November 2014 in Wuppertal, Germany. Prof. Weber has a broad international experience in research, R&D management and holds also a Professor of physics/solar energy position at the University of Freiburg. Fraunhofer ISE is the largest solar energy research institute in Europe and was one of EUREC’s founding members in 1991. "I am very pleased and honored by the unanimous vote that I received for the presidency of EUREC. It is my goal to strengthen EUREC as the representation of European Research and Development in Renewable Energy Technologies. In fact, EUREC should become one of the most important partners for both the EU Commission as well as the EU Parliament when it comes to decisions in renewable energy policy", said Prof. Weber. EERA and the SET-plan in transition By Mattias Andersson, EERA Secretariat Two new Joint Programmes under way will help the European Energy Research Alliance support the whole range of technology and systems challenges addressed in the SET-Plan Integrated Roadmap. Together with a strengthened dialogue with EU member states and the transition to a legal entity, this is expected to see a stronger EERA emerge to help make the SET-Plan a success. When the EERA Executive Committee meets in Rome on December 9th, two new EERA Joint Programmes will be on the agenda. Energy Efficiency is recognised as an important element to address climate change, energy security and industrial competiveness. Until now, energy efficiency has been addressed as part of different Joint Programmes under the European Energy Research Alliance. Now, ENEA and ECN have led the process to develop a new EERA Joint Programme on Energy Efficiency in Industrial Processes. Another important area of research and innovation that is receiving increased attention is Energy Systems Integration. This new discipline looks at the integration of all energy sources and systems across the range of electricity, water, heat and transport. The process of developing an EERA Joint Programme on this topic is currently under way led by University College Dublin, the Belgian Energy Research Alliance (BERA) and DTU.
