Inaugural Meeting of the EUA-EPUE Platform

The European University Association (EUA) has announced the Inaugural Meeting of the European Platform of Universities Engaged in Energy Research, Education and Training (EPUE), which represents its contribution to the EU Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-PLAN) and the European Energy Research Alliance.

The event, which will take place on 23-24 February 2012 at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, is expected to promote the mobilization of universities interested in education and training in the energy field. Institutions that are currently providing Masters and PhD programmes or are willing to develop them in the coming years are invited to attend. The registration deadline is 31 January 2012.

The meeting will focus on the potential role and development of the Platform, aimed to ensure that university strengths and capacities in fundamental research and training and collaborative activities with industry partners are properly included in forthcoming EU energy activities in Horizon 2020 and in the "SET Plan Energy Education and Training Initiative”. In addition, the programme will include high-level contributions from the EC Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, the Directorate-General for Energy and university leaders who have been involved in the initial development of the European Platform.

One of EPUE’s goals is to contribute directly to the creation of the "SET-PLAN Energy Education and Training Initiative” launched in December 2011.

Securing energy supply, greater energy efficiency and enhancing research and skills capacities in Europe are considered "grand societal challenges” for the energy field and major priorities within the European Commission’s forthcoming research and innovation funding programme for 2014-2020 (HORIZON 2020).

Currently, over 160 European universities with research and training capacity in the energy field, ranging from science, engineering and technology to bio-sciences, medical/life sciences and economics, social sciences and the humanities have already indicated their willingness to join the EUA-EPUE Platform.
